I have severe osteoarthritis in most of the joints in my body due partially to heredity and repeated injury as a dancer. Fine months ago I was told that my right hip would require a total hip replacement. I asked pain management to send me to an acupuncturist rather than taking pain medication.

I knew nothing about acupuncture when I met Dr. Kim, except that a woaman of my acquaintance, in her mid eighties, was facing back surgery and her surgeon had suggested she have acupuncture to make sure she was strong enough for the surgery. Dr. Kim said he was not so surprised as I was that surgeons are making such recommendations, and he was pleased to hear that the woman followed the suggestion and had successful, even triumphant results from the surgery.

More than six years ago I damaged my spine during a water-skiing accident. I opted not to have surgery and with time I learned to live with the pain. Recently, however, I re-damaged the same area of my back. The pain became acute and would not allow much relief, especially at night.

I am 77 years old and have suffered from sciatica pain in the right leg since July 2004. I belong to an HMO and went through four doctors looking for a cure (primary care, physical therapy, orthopedic surgeon and pain management). I was injected with cortisone on the spinal column; it relieved the pain for two monthes.
While awaiting another consultation with the surgeon, I had a bout of intractable pain in my leg which landed me in the emergency room twice and resulted in a four-day hospitalization at a cost to the insurer of $16,000.00. I was released with a pain patch. While waiting for the surgeon to see me again in two weeks, I decided to try acupuncture, something I did not believe in, as I don't understand how pricking the skin with needles can affect the pain I felt. I removed the pain patch following the first treatment, and after the second visit, I noticed the pain was gone. After the third visit, I walked without experiencing pain. During the treatments, Dr. Kim exhibited patience, concern, expertise and prfessionalism.
When I went to see the surgeon and next day to be evaluated for possible surgery, I revealed to him that the pain was now gone. He agreed that I should not have surgery at this time. I continue to do stretch exercises, swim and the gym and bicycle.
Although my wife had a condition that was ameliorated by acupuncture, another member of my family tried acupuncture and was not helped. I can only testify to what happeded in my case. I know I am not cured of my underlying back problems (scoliosis, degenerative disc disase and arthritis). I am somewhat limited in my walking distances, but use no cane or pain medication. I can live like this, and I am grateful to Jung K. Kim.

I have been a patient of Dr. Kim’s for about 4 months. Initially, I came to him with severe lower back and sciatica pain to him with nothing worked-physical therapy, medication and heat. My MRI showed the 5 lower lumbar discs with tenosis, compressed and bulged. The last disc was rubbing against my left leg sciatic nerve. The pain was very bad and my primary care doctor offered to put me on disability.
